Mental health challenges in rural areas of Australia are particularly concerning, with statistics showing that one in four young people experience mental health concerns over a 12-month period.
To help tackle this significant issue, we will partner with Bila Muuji Aboriginal Corporation Health Service – an organisation that provides Primary Health Care representation to the Aboriginal Medical Services across the Western and Far West of NSW – to offer the Rural Youth Mental Health (RYMH) service.
Our mobile team will work with young people experiencing mental health concerns, supporting them towards living the life they choose. They will learn how to overcome barriers, learn new skills, connect with services, and build positive coping strategies.
The service will be free of charge and will include providing information about wellbeing and health through online or local self-services; connecting to social and community networks; referrals and case management; one-on-one services with a mental health professional; and groups tailored to promote social and emotional wellbeing in the local community.
The program has been operational since August, with an official launch timed to coincide with World Mental Health Month, October 2018.
